Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)

Significance
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is a pituitary hormone under hypothalamic control. Release of FSH is controlled by Luteinizing Hormone Releasing Hormone (LHRH, also known as Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone, GnRH) and inhibin. FSH is also under negative feedback control mediated by Testosterone and Estradiol via the hypothalamus and receptors within the pituitary. FSH levels in females vary throughout the menstrual cycle with peak levels at mid-cycle. FSH is elevated in menopausal females not on hormone replacement therapy. In hypogonadism, FSH can elevated or low depending upon whether the disorder is of a primary or secondary nature.

Analysis
Determination of FSH is performed by Enzyme Immunoassay.

Patient Preparation
Morning specimen is preferred. Provide information regarding medication that may influence FSH levels.

Specimen requirements
Serum specimen - from a plain redtop or a redtop gel (tiger top) tube. Separate serum from cells after centrifugation, if a plain redtop tube is used. Minimum volume required is 1 mL. Specimen should be kept refrigerated where possible.

Shipping Instructions
Ship specimen at ambient temperatures for shipments under 24 hrs. For longer shipments, ship with ice.
